Where Are You From Poem

I am from bookshelves,
From spiral bound notebooks, and h2 lead pencils.
I am from an ever rotating number of military homes spread across the globe,
Safe and warm, and smelling of bees wax and polish.
I am from freshly cut roses
Smelling softly of summer and rain.
I am from board games and frugality,
From Emily and Jack.
I am from doers and readers,
From a tradition of military service and sacrifice,
Brought up Church of England, and Sunday school.
I’m from German, Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry.
I’m from strong English tea and fruit cake,
From Mary Anne and jelly babies, and rose bushes in full bloom.
To the kindness of Margaret, who made me soup.
Leaving me with a heart full of love, sweet memories, and black and white photos
That tell a story of lives well lived.
