Photo-Blogging – A Primer

A couple of things you need to know and remember about posting your photos online.

Or, stuff I learnt one way or another (sometimes the hard way) about photo-blogging and photography in general.

Resizing Images

You should always, but always, resize any photo that you upload to your web site before publishing it. The rule being that if someone downloads it without your consent they cannot claim it as their own, as you have the originals to hand at full-size, and they don’t. Also, anyone appropriating a 700 pixel jpg (or smaller) will not be able to print out anything bigger than a 5 x 7 without loss of detail.

Watermarks & Signatures

The best way to make sure no one steals a photo from your blog is to watermark it in some way, especially with a signature. If you own a copy of Photoshop, great, you can do this fairly easily. I use Elements (a cut down version of PS, which is cheaper but still as powerful) to place a subtle ghosted signature on all my uploads. While it might not deter the most determined thief, it will make it all the more difficult for them to claim your work as their own.
