Novels

I’ve written any number of novels over the years, mostly for my own benefit and, as one would think, a means of learning my craft. Most of those early drafts never saw the light of day. Writing (prolifically I might add) has, if nothing else, helped me hone my story-telling skills never mind been an outlet for my over-active imagination. Most of what is listed here will, eventually, make it into print or offered as an eBook download, and be available to buy in the bookstore.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these excerpts.

ELEMENTAL (SF) — 2006
This is my attempt at a sweeping science fantasy story of love, loss and redemption, to be written in three parts. So far book one, ELEMENTAL, (in what will be THE BRIGHT WORLDS trilogy) is completed and currently under going revision and edits. Work on book two, DARK MATTER, will commence once edits on ELEMENTAL are complete.

The Teaser
Azrael is crossing the galaxy looking for the original Atom. The one She, his Creator, breathed the Word of Power into and, in doing so, brought forth all creation. He needs the Atom to undo what has been done and end His twisted existance, even if that means the complete destruction of the Universe. READ SAMPLE »

SELF (Speculative Fiction) — 2006
I could say that this story is about the exploration of self but that wouldn’t be quite the truth. Nor is it an exploration of the Them and Us culture, nor is it necessarily about the near-future and what we might expect technology-wise 10 or 15 years down the road. When it came down to it, my two characters ran off with the story, as my characters have a way of doing, and all the rest? Suddenly took a back seat to the love story. So much for writing intriguing SF, this one is a romance with SF over-tones.

The Teaser
Rachel Cellini is head of one of the worlds largest Bio-tech companies producing AP (Artificial People) and wields considerable power. But emotionally, is resigned to the fact her heart may never know love. She has become a virtual recluse, hidden atop her mountain eyrie. Forsaking any chance at happiness, Cellini has thrown herself into her work.

Jennifer Jones cannot remember. Cannot remember anything about her past. Not who she is, or why she is being chased by the FBI. And only after a chance meeting with Cellini, does she begin to suspect the truth. That not only has she killed someone, but that she might be an AP. READ SAMPLE »

FAMILY ROOTS (Romance) — 2006
I don’t pretend that this novella is anything other than a heart-warming love story of redemption. In which two dispirited women find one another after chance, or quite possibly Fate intervenes, and brings them together. And, in the space of one long hot Spring weekend amid the rural setting of the Napa Valley, they find love in one another’s arms and heart. I thoroughly enjoyed writing this one, which was simply an indulgenemt that I hope you too will enjoy for what it is.

The Teaser
Vintner, Catherine Beringer has devoted herself to her beloved vines for the last twenty years. Beset by demons from her youth, she believes her heart will forever live in darkness. That is, till an unlikely stranger arrives at the Beringer Estate the weekend of her 50th birthday and finds a chink in her armour.

Enjoying life and a vibrant career as an artist, cancer suddenly strikes down Alice Churchill and, abandoned by those she thought her lovers and friends, is left all but a broken woman. When ex-lover Bette Kennedy tries to force her way back into her shattered life, Alice runs. Running right into the arms of Catherine Beringer and, for the first time in her life, sees the light of love in an other’s eyes. READ SAMPLE »

HIGHWAY OF TEARS (Urban Fantasy) — 2007
Taking the heartbreaking subject of female abduction and murder, and featuring an Ethnic group who many still view as a minority in their own country, I’m attempting to weave together the situations First Nation Aboriginals (living in reserves along Highway 16 in British Columbia) continue to find themselves living with. Focusing on how these events affect not just the people of these small, tight-knit communities but also those charged with protecting them.

The Teaser
Six foot two, Jude Devine—Little Bear to her friends—is an Aboriginal RCMP Corporal with no use for the mystical. When her neat and ordered life is turned upside down after saving the life of a delusional stranger, she begins to wonder about her own sanity, never mind her beliefs.

When Wren Mitchell has a near-death experience and is offered a choice between dying, or living her life as a Walker. She chooses life. Finding herself up to her proverbial armpits in murder, and up against a couple of trickster Guardian Spirit Guides each with an agenda of their own, Wren finds being one of the living dead nothing like she imagined it would be!

GEOMETRY OF SHADOWS (Science Fantasy) — 2008
When I started writing this science fantasy for NaNoWriMo in November, 2008, it was more as an exercise in seeing where the two characters of Raen and Daria would take me, and how they themselves would grow. Well, grow the pair have, from what was originally planned as a short story or, at the very least, a NaNo novella, this one has taken on a depth of its own and has now become a series in the making. THE LAST WORD (Speculative Fiction) — 2009
I have had this story sketched out since the mid 80s, and probably have almost 200 hand-written pages, along with a large collection of newspaper clippings and research notes.

While I have continued to add to those notes and research, I decided last month enough was enough and that this story would be an ideal candidate for my 2009, NaNoWriMo project. I mean, what a great way to get this one finally kick-started, never mind, actually written? Check out the ‘in-progress’ writing of each chapter in: SERIALIZED STORIES »

COME THE INQUISITOR (SF) — 2009
Another sweeping SF, this one set in a far flung future in another time and, quite possibly, another galaxy altogether. I started writing about the “Judges” almost 15 years ago, sketching out an outline that encapsulated the idea of a judiciary over-seen by a Guild of sensitives able to ‘read’ people though bodily contact. And, from there, this one has exploded into a huge epic space opera that like Elemental, may take me a year or two to complete in order to do the full story (and characters) justice!

KATE’S LAMENT (Drama) — 2010
Part dramatic mystery, part police procedural, part romance, this character-driven story focuses on a single week in the life of New York City police detective, Kate Martinelli, who was a first-responder at the World Trade center disaster during the 9-11 attacks, and what it is that shapes her, drives her, and what makes her, above all else, as a human being and police officer, tick.
